Thomsen examines the attitudes about creativity and gender that have shaped women’s experiences as artists during the late nineteenth century until the present. In addition to showing a variety of women’s art forms, Thomsen provides a glimpse into the problematic myths and obstacles that made it difficult for women to enter and be recognized in the art world. She offers brief portraits of Mary Cassatt and Georgia O’Keefe to illuminate the necessity of personal, social, and familial support systems to help challenge the stereotypes that marginalized women artists and their creative works.
